Kate Middleton's eyeliner criticised by Vivienne Westwood

Sep 05, 2023Sep 05, 2023

The late great fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood was renowned for her fantastic designs and unpredictable fashion catwalks.

She also was certainly not shy about sharing her opinions about people in the public eye, including members of the Royal Family.

Back in 2011 when Princess Kate married into the Royal Family, she made a bold claim that she did not like the Princess of Wales's sense of style.

Princess Kate tends to use black eyeliner on both her upper and lower lids, which was critiqued by the late designer, who sadly died in December 2022.

Ms Westwood told the Sunday Times Magazine: "I think she's got a problem with eye make-up.

"The sharp line around her eyes make her look hard. Either she should [wear it] smudgy or wear none."

The Princess's appearance, according to Ms Westwood, who was renowned for both her controversial fashion sense and her outlandish catwalk designs, is simply "ordinary" for her.

She added: "It seems to me, that her image is 'ordinary woman'. Therefore, high street shopper.

"And I just think that she should be an extraordinary woman, wherever she gets her clothes from."

Interestingly, there was a surge in searches for "Kate Middleton make-up" that occurred in August 2011, following these comments in the UK's Sunday Times Magazine.

When it comes to her beauty routine, the Princess of Wales exudes considerable confidence.

For important events, like her wedding, which was broadcast to two billion people worldwide, she did her own make-up.

Kate also brought a hairdresser on her Royal Tour to Canada and the United States in 2011, but no stylist or make-up artist.

Celebrity make-up artist Rachel Wood told MailOnline: "Kate is lucky - she has beautiful skin and a pretty face.

"She is one of the lucky kind of girls that can slip through on the not-so-perfect make-up front, but I do feel her eyeliner is a little dated and harsh for her beautiful eyes."

Ms Wood said she would advise the Princess to lighten the pressure with her bottom lash line pencil and apply more mascara in its place.

"I'd love to see her with a strong and classic liquid on top and take her favoured hard black pencil on the bottom and soften and smoke it out. I would also love to give her a little more mascara."
